Styling your home for a viewing

  • by

When preparing your house for viewing, presenting it well could be the difference between making a sale or turning potential buyers off. Here are four simple tips to give you the best chance of success.

  1. Go neutral
Give your interior a lick of paint, especially if the walls are discoloured. When you do, choose whites and greys to allow prospective buyers to envisage their lifestyle in the property. Accompany this with neutral accessories, such as bedding and other soft furnishings.
  2. Tidy
Keep everything tidy and clutter-free before a viewing. Store away any bulky itemssuch as overflowing shoe racks and any pet items. Keep tables and surfaces clear and polished. Hoover and dust everywhere, including lampshades and skirting and make sure all kitchen appliances are gleaming.
  3. Fix
Take the time to fix anything broken. In the kitchen and bathrooms, replace any broken tiles and refresh any grout and sealant. Make sure all light bulbs work and tidy any visible wiring.
  4. Keep it fresh
Buyers will soon turn their noses at any stale odours or pet smells. Before viewing, use a carpet freshener to remove any stinks and be sure to display fresh bed linen. Replace discoloured shower curtains and use new towels, even if just for the day.
  5. Think outdoors
Remember, for some properties, the outdoor space may be where you’ll make the all-important first impression. Clean doors and windows, and repaint if they are wooden. Cut back any overhanging growth and make sure bins are carefully stored or hidden away. Keep the lawn mowed and jet wash any patio areas.

Follow these simple steps and you’ll wow the buyer for all the right reasons.
